Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Q & A

What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a surgical technique in which Dr. Garcini makes only minimal incisions to do the work. Using specialized tools, he threads a camera through the incision in order to get a clear view of the area on a monitor, allowing him to fully visualize your abdominal and pelvic organs using only a small fiber optic lens.

Once he’s able to get a clear view, he inserts tiny tools that translate his movements, allowing Dr. Garcini to operate in very small areas without needing access for his full hands.

What is robotic surgery?

Robot-assisted surgery takes laparoscopy to the next level by using a computerized arm, which is guided by Dr. Garcini to accomplish complex and precise work in small areas. To do this, he uses the da Vinci® Surgical System, a robotic platform which enables him to see the operative field in a 3D-enhanced fashion, which is magnified up to 10-fold.

When it comes to removing your uterus, Dr. Garcini is able to use these techniques to perform a total laparoscopic hysterectomy or a single-incision hysterectomy.

What are the advantages of a laparoscopic hysterectomy?

There are a number of advantages to using laparoscopic and robot-assisted techniques, not the least of which is the minimally-invasive nature of the procedure. Traditionally, a hysterectomy was an open procedure, which meant the doctor had to make a large incision in order to remove your uterus. This created additional risk of infection, bleeding, and collateral tissue damage.

Using only tiny incisions, Dr. Garcini greatly reduces these risks, leaving behind almost no evidence of the surgery, and it lessens your recovery time. In fact, he can often perform the procedure on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home afterward.

In addition, when Dr. Garacini uses robotic equipment for your hysterectomy, he brings the perfect blend of technology and human experience. The platform affords him a greater precision and accuracy as the machine translate his movements, while also allowing his human experience to prevail should a problem arise.
