Labiaplasty Q & A

What is a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a procedure in which Dr. Garcini removes the excess tissue in your labia to keep it more proportional to your existing external tissue. If your labia minora hangs below the skin that holds your hair (your labia majora), the tissue can become irritated and tug uncomfortably during normal, everyday activities, such as:

  • Sexual intercourse
  • Wearing a swimsuit
  • Riding a bike

In some cases, your labia may also result in embarrassing situations if it sneaks out from underneath your swimsuit.

What happens during a labiaplasty?

If you opt for a labiaplasty, there are two ways Dr. Garcini can go about the procedure:

A trim procedure

With this technique, Dr. Garcini simply removes the excess tissue and sutures the area back up.

Wedge procedure

With a wedge procedure, Dr. Garcini removes a wedge-shaped piece of your labia and sutures the new ends together, tightening the tissue.

In both cases, Dr. Garcini uses either local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending upon your level of comfort. He is also well-versed in the latest surgical techniques to ensure that the procedure is as minimally invasive as possible to reduce your risks and downtime.

What is recovery like after a labiaplasty?

You should count on taking it easy for about a week following your procedure and rely on icing to address any swelling or discomfort. You may experience swelling for up to six weeks afterward, but this does go away as your labia adjusts to its new shape.

You should also avoid using tampons or having sex for at least four to six weeks after your labiaplasty.

Dr. Garcini ensures that you have complete aftercare instructions, and he’s on call should you have any questions or concerns.

When will I see the final results?

Most women enjoy their results within a few weeks after the surgery, enabling them to get on with their daily routines without the discomfort of an oversized labia. In fact, the procedure has a 90% satisfaction rate, which is a testament to its efficacy.
