Hormone Replacement Therapy Q & A

What causes a drop in hormones?

Over the course of your life, your reproductive hormone levels are constantly fluctuating to accommodate the needs of your body at any given time. This all begins as you pass through puberty and enter your childbearing years, which is a time when your reproductive hormones are at their highest levels.

If you do give birth along the way, you’ll experience much more pronounced fluctuations in your hormone levels, which simply gives you a taste of what lies ahead when you pass through menopause.

Menopause is the inevitable transition a woman makes from her reproductive years to her nonreproductive years, and it’s caused by a precipitous and permanent drop in estrogen levels. Once you’ve no longer had your period for 12 months in a row, you’re considered to be through menopause, which usually happens in your late 40s and early 50s.

The road leading up to and through menopause can be a bumpy one, as the side effects of the drop in hormones begin to kick in.

What are the side effects of a drop in hormones?

While menopause is the leading cause of decreased hormone levels, other things can also create the same drop -- namely pregnancies, medications, chemotherapy, or a hysterectomy. Whatever the cause, you’re left dealing with the aftermath, which can include:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Moodiness
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Weight gain
  • Incontinence

Every woman reacts differently to her hormone levels; some may not feel any side effects while others undergo life-altering symptoms. If you’re experiencing moderate-to-severe symptoms that persist, hormone replacement therapy may offer the solution you’re looking for.

How can hormone replacement therapy (HRT) help?

After reviewing your symptoms and your medical health, Dr. Garcini may recommend hormone replacement therapy to get you back on track and feeling more like yourself again.

Dr. Garcini offers BioTE®, which is HRT that uses bioidentical hormones, which he delivers through pellets placed under your skin. The pellets slowly release bioidentical hormones into your system, helping regulate your overall levels.

The pellets last anywhere from three to six months, at which time you simply return for a replacement.
